While there are over 200 types of cancer, they generally fall into major categories based on where they start in the body. The most common types are carcinomas. These start in tissues known as epithelial tissues such as the skin or the tissues lining organs such as the lungs, breasts, prostate, and colon). Sarcomas are another common type of cancer. These start in the connective or supportive tissues, such as bones, cartilage, fat, muscle, or blood vessels. Leukaemias are cancers of the blood-forming tissue, like the bone marrow. They don’t usually form solid tumours; instead, they cause an overproduction of abnormal white blood cells. Finally, Lymphomas and Myelomas are cancers that start in the cells of the immune system. Lymphoma affects the lymphatic system, while myeloma affects plasma cells. Read a transcript
